Depression is normally a health problem that no one would want to come across in there lifetime. However, this condition is among the challenges that people cannot easily run away from. For this reason, depression medication had to be found so that patients could easily be helped come out of this situation once they find themselves in it. These medications are often vital for the proper recovery of the patient in the hard process of recovering. At times, the medicines may need to be combined in order to achieve needed results something that is usually not new to depressed patients.
Mood stabilizer is among the most commonly used depression medication today. It is mostly used for bipolar depression where it is used to control and stabilize your moods so that you do not find yourself swinging from high levels (manic) to low levels (depression). A good example of a mood stabilizer is Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid). This stabilizer is usually administered in the first line of treatment where manic episodes have taken place. Unfortunately, in most cases, mood stabilizers often need to be taken throughout the patient’s life so as to avoid a recurrence of the bipolar depression. One major side effect of this medication is that, once taken, it may result in harming a developing fetus or a nursing infant.
Anti-seizure medication also known as an anticonvulsant, is another depression medication that can be used to stop mood swings from occurring. However, unlike the mood stabilizer, the anticonvulsant is usually meant to be used by patients with a certain kind of bipolar depression known as the rapid cycling bipolar disorder and not any other type of depression. Among the commonly used anticonvulsants today are such as divalproex (Depakote), lamotrigine (Lamictal) and valproic acid (Depakene). All these medicines can always be obtained from any pharmacy that is near you but they need to be taken according to the doctors instruction to avoid any misfortunes that may easily come with them.
Whenever anti-seizure medication does not respond well with the patient, anti psychotic medication such as risperidone (Risperdal) and olanzapine (zyprexa) can easily be used as its substitute. Just like the anti-seizure medication, this depression medication works by regulating the mood swings of the patient hence preventing them from reaching both extreme ends. Although anti psychotic medication may be seen to cure depression problems, it may at times increase the risks of getting diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity and therefore, not many doctors recommend this type of medication. Hence, before you decide to use anti psychotic medication consult your doctor first and let him conduct a proper diagnosis on you so as to know for sure whether you are fit to use this medication or not.
For anxiety depression, anti-anxiety medications such as benzodiazepines are usually recommended by many doctors since they help a lot in reducing the intensity of the anxious episodes being experienced by the patient. In addition to this, these medicines assist the patient to sleep well. Another anti-anxiety medication known as quetiapine (Seroquel) has also been recently approved by food and drug administrations all over the world. This medicine is greatly considered to be one of the best depression medication since it is able to treat both the manic and depressive episodes without having to leave much side effects behind with the patient.
Having known that depression medication may come with side effects, it is usually advisable to talk to your doctor about undertaking constant monitoring for any health problems that may be as a result of this.
